Growing Older Gracefully

As we get older, we worry about so many things; Kids, careers, finances, and if we are lucky enough to have parents, their well-being.

Once the kids are out of the house and on their own, in time, you will begin the process of deciding what is best for your own future. For many, this will be a very daunting topic. Questions you will face: Do you have the financial means to support yourself? How is your health? Do you have a support system nearby to be there if you need them in an emergency? Where and how do you see yourself spending your "Golden Years"?

For many, the thought of moving out of their home is very traumatic. For others, moving to an Adult or Assisted Living Community is a wonderful option. How does one make this decision, what factors come into play? For instance, do you want to be in a social environment, to be able to play cards, participate in sports activities, participate in group trips off-site, or are you just looking for companionship to enjoy meals with friends? There are so many options for community living, and the number of communities that offer these options is growing rapidly.

Studies show many aging empty nesters just want to stay in their current home. They may live near their family or friends and find that they are very comforted being in the surroundings they have known for many years.

From my own experience, having a mother that was living alone in the next town, my siblings and I tried to convince her to move to Florida to be near her friends. She did not want to be away from her family, so she has chosen to stay in the apartment she shared with my father for many years. It was a comfort to her to be where she spent quality time with him before he passed away. As her health started to fail, she has begun to fall and injure herself. As I am a Certified Aging In Place Specialist (CAPS) and knowledgeable in this area, I knew to improve the quality of her surroundings to allow her to live alone safely. I installed grab bars in her bathroom. She was not at all pleased about this until she inevitably fell the next time and was able to get herself up on her own, with the use of the bars.

With all of the technology that is currently available, and it continues to advance, there are many options available to assist clients to modify their homes to make it safer, healthier and more comfortable to remain in place.

Working with my clients on staying safer in their homes is a passion of mine. I continue to spend my time educating the elderly or disabled on how to stay safe, and is what I will be doing until it is my time to need my own services.
